Neurology - The Basics Of The Human Brain

Neurology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. There are many diseases and conditions that can impair the functioning of the human brain and since this part of the anatomy is so complex, scientists are only recently beginning to understand how our brains work and how these conditions affect us.

Problems With The Brain

When our brains are experiencing a problem it affects the entire body. The brain is the control center of the whole body, so when there is an injury in this organ, it can have serious consequences for a person’s life. The brain is not only the control center of our body but it also affects the way we think, feel, and behave in any situation.

Conditions And Illnesses Affecting Our Brains

While some conditions are more prevalent during childhood, others are more prevalent as we get older. Conditions such as ADHD affect the behavioral and social aspects of a child’s life and this has been linked to certain abnormalities within the brain. While certain children struggle with ADHD due to an abnormality in the prefrontal cortex, other children struggle with this problem due to a chemical imbalance within the brain.

Alzheimer’s is another disease that attacks the functioning of the brain and this sets in after the age of 65. As the disease takes over our cognitive processes we lose our capacity to function independently and this is due to the impact that it has on our brain.

The Neurons In The Brain

The neurons in the brain are the messengers and they are responsible for transmitting important information throughout the organ. If our neurons fail to work properly then begin to experience problems such as seizures or other illnesses. The wiring within the brain is extremely complex and this is why it is often difficult to find out where the problem is in order to solve it.

The Different Areas Of The Brain

The brain is divided into specific areas and these areas are then divided once again. Scientists are able to pinpoint certain areas of the brain that control certain functions but it is not always possible to pinpoint exact locations since more than one area is working together at any particular time. We never use only one part; a variety of areas are used when we breathe, blink, concentrate and take in sounds and noises from the environment around us.

Finding The Problem And The Solution

The reason that neurology is such a young science is the fact that our brains are so complex that they are difficult to understand. In order to find solutions to problems within the brain, we need to take measures one step at a time so that our test subjects are not harmed in any way. This is not always easy and this is also why it takes much longer in order to research certain illnesses and the effectiveness of the treatment methods.
